Lineform is local-first: your writing stays on your Mac. This page explains what that means in practice.

No account

Lineform has no account system. You don't sign up, sign in, or hand over an email address to use it.

No analytics or telemetry

Lineform does not collect usage analytics or telemetry.

Your files stay on your Mac

Documents you open or create in Lineform are stored as ordinary Markdown or plain text files on your Mac. Lineform does not upload your documents anywhere. If you choose to sync those files yourself, with iCloud Drive, Git, or any other tool, that's between you and the service you picked.

Network access

At most once a day, Lineform can read a small public announcements file on the Lineform website for occasional news, such as a new version. The request has no body, query string, account, identifier, cookie, or document content. Lineform stores the last-check time and a validated copy of the public feed locally so it can limit requests and restore an announcement after relaunch. Turn off In-app notifications in Settings to prevent this request entirely.

Links you choose to open may connect to their destination in your web browser. The Mac App Store handles Lineform installation and updates; the app has no self-updater.

Other local services

Images written as a web address are never downloaded. Spell checking uses the checker built into macOS, and read-aloud uses macOS speech voices; neither sends your document content to Lineform or another service.

Lineform's source is public on GitHub under the PolyForm Shield License, so you can read exactly what the app does rather than take our word for it.
